For the past year, State Trustees has called Footscray home. As we celebrate our first anniversary at our new state-of-the-art building at 1 McNab Avenue, Footscray it’s an appropriate time to reflect on the year we’ve had, the successes we have achieved and the challenges we face as we continue to adapt and grow in our new environment.
The relocation of 250 employees from Exhibition Street, Melbourne to 1 McNab Avenue, Footscray was a mammoth undertaking, and it ushered in the beginning of a new era for our organisation. As one door closed on forty years of history at 168 Exhibition Street, Melbourne a new one opened in Melbourne’s west, welcoming State Trustees and its customers into the 21st Century.
As well as bringing us closer to Melbourne’s western growth corridor, and providing greater access to northern and western Victoria, our relocation symbolised the transformation of State Trustees into a modern, client-focused and world-leading trustee organisation.
Our new building houses various spaces that foster employee collaboration, with the aid of state-of-the-art technology. It also complements our offices in Dandenong and Bendigo, helping us create better service delivery for all Victorians.
Showing our new, contemporary headquarters to the Treasurer of Victoria, Tim Pallas MP, prior to this morning’s official opening of the building afforded me the opportunity to share with the Treasurer the positive changes the relocation has made to our employees, customers and the business as a whole.
Since I commenced in my role as CEO, I’ve been keenly focused on changing our organisation’s culture. I firmly believe that to deliver a consistently good customer service, we have to ensure our internal culture is aligned to this objective.
But culture does not create itself. We need to provide our people the right tools and create an environment that will foster collaboration and innovation. That’s why our new building is so important to State Trustees.
Through the establishment of an open plan office environment, we have provided a space where employees are able to engage with areas of the business they wouldn’t normally, creating opportunities for people to work and pay closer attention to one another. These interactions have allowed us to achieve a greater level of knowledge transfer, and enabled employees to develop a holistic view of our operations, further breaking silos which had previously existed.
Our leadership team is highly accessible and I am encouraged to see employees approaching the team increasingly with questions, seeking advice or with great ideas. As we continue to encourage an environment that nurtures innovation, providing our employees an informal way of sharing ideas, and most importantly having them heard, is a key enabler in achieving our desired constructive culture.
For companies that can get it right, the open-office environment results in real increases to productivity and employee engagement. State Trustees’ home here in Footscray will be the beating heart of the organisation for decades to come, and getting our culture right will ensure we continue to provide a quality service for all our customers well into the next century.
I am very proud to be leading State Trustees in becoming a world-leading trustee organisation. This vision is becoming a reality across not just our Footscray head office, but throughout our Dandenong and Bendigo offices as well.
